Netflixs rating system gets a much needed update

Netflix has released a video on its YouTube account that announces its update to the title-rating system. The video explains the current star-rating, which is totally irrelevant now and the video could have done without the unnecessary explanation. However.com, Netflix has gone the way of YouTube and replaced its star-rating system to a like/dislike affair. “It’s kind of like dating apps, actually”. Yeah, okay Netflix.

We’re not sure about you guys, but some of us here at the office, myself included, had no idea how the star ratings were calculated (heck, I didn’t even know there was a more in-depth calculation behind it). It turns out the star-ratings are there to recommend titles to you based on your show preferences. If a title had a four or five-star rating, it meant that you’d be highly likely to enjoy it based on your profile.

With the new update, Netflix will now show a percentage based on the likelihood of a match. Example: “95% Match”. Netflix claims that this new method of ratings will make “smarter, more personalized, recommendations.”
