Availability

Availability is an important consideration when choosing a Xiaomi phone. Xiaomi only caters to a limited set of official markets and getting their products outside of those markets can require you to shop from gray importer - some online shop, which may or may not assist you if it gets to after-sales support.

If you happen to live in one of the official markets, however, that doesnt mean you have it easy either. Sometimes making sense of the differences in the available models can be a daunting task, too. Especially in this case, where the Redmi 3s Prime can be found at about €150 - the same price as the Redmi 4 Prime. But which one you should buy then? Thats the question well try to a nswer today.

Special thanks to HonorBuy.com for providing the review units.

Retail package

All Redmis come in small paper boxes and those contain only the most crucial necessities - a 2A wall plug and a microUSB cable. Xiaomi is not bundling headphones or cases in this price range.

Size and weight

Xiaomi Redmi 3s Prime spreads at 139.3 x 69.6 x 8.5 mm and weighs 144g, while the Redmi 4 Prime footprint is slightly bigger at 141.3 x 69.6 x 8.9mm. The Redmi 4 Prime also weighs a bit more at 156g.

Design

The Redmi 3s P rime and Redmi 4 Prime may have a lot in common, but design is not one these shared elements. While both Redmi have metal bodies with the satin finish on the back being their design highlight, the similarities end there.

Xiaomi Redmi 3s Prime vs Redmi 4 Prime review

The Redmi 3s Prime is built in the spirit of previous generations Redmi phones with rounder edges and a frame that transitions smoothly into the rear cover piece. On the contrary, the Redmi 4 Prime has flat sides bordered by chamfers, and then the rear cover begins with a curve.

A closer peek on the back of the Redmi 3s Prime reveals the top and bottom bands are made of plastic, no surprises here, since those cover the phones antennas. Then there is the Redmi 4 Prime, which keeps the top plastic strip, but the bottom one is replaced by an iPhone-like tiny gray line, which allows the 4 Prime to keep the metal going all the way to the bottom.

If the chamfers, the flat frame, and the antenna shields were not enough to make a difference for you, there is also the screen glass - the Redmi 3s Prime has a perfectly flat screen, while the 4 Primes is curved along the edges in the trendy 2.5D manner.

Finally, the handling of both phones is grea t, but the Redmi 4 Prime provides a bit more secure grip thanks to the chamfers around the frame.

Winner: Xiaomi Redmi 4 Prime. Despite the strange mix of antenna strip designs, the more prominent frame with the nice chamfers and the 2.5D glass raise the Redmi 4 Prime looks above its predecessor. Its not only the better looker of the two, but its design is one of the best in the price range.

Screen

The display is where things start to get even more competitive. The Redmi 4 Prime uses a 5-inch IPS unit of 1080p resolution, which offers flagship-grade 441ppi pixel density and is actually a premium choice in this segment.

Xiaomi Redmi 3s Prime vs Redmi 4 Prime review

The Redmi 3s Prime, on the other hand, offers a lower 720p resolution, which drops the pixel density down to 294ppi over the same 5-inch diagonal. Even though this number seems low when compared to the Redmi 4 Prime, its still great for a budget smartphone.

Xiaomi Redmi 3s Prime vs Redmi 4 Prime review

Both screens offer very good viewing angles and a crisp image, but if you put them next to each other, you will clearly notice the crisper picture on the Redmi 4 courtesy of the higher r esolution.

Naturally, we tested both screens and things turned out very similar. The black levels are OK for LCD panels and, combined with the relatively high brightness, both Redmi 3s Prime and Redmi 4 Prime achieved respectable contrast ratios. There is a tiny bit of difference in the blacks of the Redmi 3s - they turned out a bit deeper, hence the higher contrast, but its a rather insignificant difference and that cant be seen with a naked eye.

With an average deviation (DeltaE) of 7.1 the screens color accuracy of the Redmi 3s Prime is about average. The colors are punchy, but if you want a more color accurate representation you may want to try the Warm Color option in Display Settings - it changes the color calibration to a very balanced one with an average DeltaE of 4.4.

The Redmi 4 Prime has a reasonably accurate color accuracy in Standard mode with an average DeltaE of 5.0. Opting for Warm colors takes average DeltaE to 4.6, close to the Redmi 3s Prime 4.4 result.

Overall both screens can be tuned for very good calibration, but the default mode of the Redmi 4 Prime is more accurate than the one on the Redmi 3s Prime.

Outdoors, the Xiaomi Redmi 3s Prime is an above average performer regarding sunlight legibility. The glass on top of the display is reflective, but most of the time youll have no problem viewing the screen content.

The Redm i 4 Prime glass is no better, and in fact, it scores less than the Redmi 3s Prime and thus offers only average visibility under bright sunlight.

Winner: Xiaomi Redmi 4 Prime. Both screens are very good in their own class and do praiseworthy on the tests, but the Redmi 4 Primes higher resolution is a real treat and if put side by side, everyone will pick the Redmi 4 over the 3s.

Battery

Both Redmi 3s Prime and Redmi 4 Prime are powered by similar 4,100 mAh battery units. Those phones have different screens and chipsets, though, so we expected to encounter some difference.

The Xiaomi Redmi 3s Prime running on Snapdragon 430 outed an 85h endurance rating and posted respectable scores across all tests.

Xiaomi Redmi 3s Prime vs Redmi 4 Prime review

The Redmi 4 Prime and its Snapdragon 625 did better with a final endurance of 91 hours. It also bested the web and talk scores of the Redmi 3s Prime, but underperformed on video playback.

Xiaomi Redmi 3s Prime vs Redmi 4 Prime review

Both phones support regular charging over a 5V/2A adapter, which may not be as fast as the newer QuickCharge standards, but still do a good job.

Winner: Redmi 4 Prime. Its a simple matter of numbers and the Redmi 4 Prime wins, though not by a huge margin.

Software

This versus article puts two Xiaomi siblings on the arena and those are conveniently running on the same Android and MIUI iterations. The Android OS ticking beneath the latest MIUI 8 is Marshmallow with the Nougat upgrade probably being in dev elopment but far from release.

MIUI is a very powerful, yet clean launcher and thats what makes it attractive to a handful of users. The drawer-free homescreen and simplistic narrative of the interface has made the MIUI a fan-favorite throughout the years and thats why it can be found running even on non-Xiaomi smartphones.

While MIUI looks very clean and si mple it is also a really powerful launcher. It allows for rich customizations via themes and you can even change the system icons and fonts. There is also a powerful Security app to handle all advanced options such as permissions, battery saver, data counters and limits, and call blacklists, among others.

Both Redmi 3s Prime and Redmi 4 Prime are treated with the same functions and services across the similar OS and launcher versions and there isnt a single feature missing in any of them.

The highlights of the MIUI8 features are Dual Apps and dual spaces. Dual Apps means you can have two instances of any app on your device, so you can, for example, have two WhatsApp accounts on the same phone, one for each SIM, something you couldnt do before.

MIUI is as powerful as any other launcher on the market and among the better ones weve seen. WE are sure everyone will find a reason to like it.

Winner: Tie. Coming with identical software versions, quite expectedly, both phones prov ide the same features.

Performance

We expect the Performance section of this comparison article to surely tip the scales. While both Redmis are somewhat in the same league, the Redmi 3s Prime is running on the low-tier Snapdragon 430 chip, while the Redmi 4 Prime is powered by the mid-tied Snapdragon 625 chip. Both devices come with 3GB of RAM.

The Snapdragon 430 SoC packs an octa-core Cortex-A53 processor ticking at 1.4GHz and Adreno 505 GPU. The Snapdragon 625 has a more powerful octa-core A53 CPU at 2.0GHz and a newer Adreno 506 GPU and is also the current reigning midrange champion in power-efficiency since its built around a 14nm fabrication process.

On the other hand, the Redmi 3s Prime has a 720p display, which means it needs less processing power under the hood to do the same tasks the Redmi 4 Prime has to complete on its 1080p screen.

So, without further ado, here are the results.

Naturally, a single A53 core at 2.0GHz will be faster than one clocked at 1.4GHz, and the same applies for eight of those. So as raw CPU power is concerned, the Redmi 4 Prime is more powerful indeed.

The Adreno 506 GPU inside the Redmi 4 is also more powerful than its 505 predecessor inside the Redmi 3s and you can clearly see its superiority in the offscreen GFX tests, which sole purpose is to demonstrate raw graphics power.

The real deal are the onscreen tests, where things go in the opposite direction. The Redmi 3s has a lower display resolution and thus it will require less GPU muscle to do the same job as the Redmi 4. And the graphics benchmarks paint an entirely different picture, where, in fact, the Redmi 3s is doing better in graphics and will surely do better in handling games.

Finally, we ran AnTuTu 6 and BaseMark OS II compound tests. These gauge CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, web, and even OS performance, though the CPU parts seem to have a bigger impact on the score than the rest. Even though the Redmi 3s Prime does better in graphics, the total points are in favor of the Redmi 4 Prime.

Speaker and audio quality

Each of the Redmis offer a single loudspeaker and each of those scored Average across our loudness test board. The sound quality on both devices was above average with deep and crisp sound.

Speakerphone testVoice, dBPink noise/ Music, dBRinging phone, dBOverall score
Xiaomi Redmi 4 Prime63.167.371.3Average
Xiaomi Redmi 3s Prime63.169.572.3Average

The Xiaomi Redmi 4 Prime and Redmi 3S Prime both demonstrated perfectly clean output when hooked up to an active external amplifier. The loudness on the 4 is higher though, and while its not that important here it still helps it get this round.

Plugging in a pair of headphones does very minimal damage to the output of the two mid-rangers, which is an impressive achievement on its own. Once again the Redmi 4 Prime is the louder of the two and with the clarity closely matched it walks away the overall winner.

Winner: Redmi 4 Prime, though only because its audi o output turned out louder. But louder output means it would handle bigger headphones more easily so thats an important aspect.

Two 13MP snappers, one prize

Xiaomi Redmi 3 Prime features a 13MP camera with f/2.0 aperture and a single-LED flash. The Redmi 4 Prime is equipped with another 13MP main camera with f/2.2 aperture and a dual-tone dual-LED flash. Both setups also come with a hybrid autofocus system utilizing phase-detection for faster and more accurate focus.

The camera interface is identical across both devices and fairly simple. It features toggles for the HDR mode, the flash and the video camera. The available advanced modes are Panorama, Beautify, Scenes, Timer, and Manual as well as the camera settings. Seventeen live filters are at your disposal, too.

The Xiaomi Redmi 3s Prime performs very well regarding image quality. It takes photos very quickly, resolves more than enough detail even in the foliage, and the noise levels are kept reasonably low. The white balance is accurate, and we like the lively color rendition though sometimes it tends to go for colder tones. On a positive note, the images come out sharper than those by the Redmi 4.

The Redmi 4 Prime also captures enough detail, though a bit l ower than the Redmi 3s Primes snapper. There is a prominent corner softness that was just a minor issue with the 3s Prime. The color rendering goes in the opposite direction towards the warmer hues. The noise levels are also low, but due to the smaller aperture forcing a slightly higher ISO, they are a notch higher here than on the Redmi 3s Prime.

The dynamic range turned out above average on both devices, and sometimes they managed to surprise us by capturing a lot of detail in the shadows without turning the HDR mode on.

The HDR mode works fine on both phones, though sometimes the Redmi 3s Prime produces oversharpened images.

The panoramic images is the one place where the Redmi 4 did better. It offers a higher resolution pano shots with about 200 0px height, while the image quality stays very good across both samples.

The Redmi 3s Prime comes with a 5MP selfie camera with f/2.2 aperture. It produces pleasant photos with enough detail to serve their purpose. There is noise, but not that much to ruin the picture, and the colors are close to the real ones.

The Redmi 4 Prime also comes with a 5MP selfie snapper but with a f/2.4 aperture. It resolves a whisker less detail and the noise levels are higher. The colors are colder than what our eyes so.

The photos will surely do the job, of course, but the Redmi 3s Prime selfies are bet ter.

Winner: Redmi 3s Prime. Its primary and selfie cameras do better than the one on the Redmi 4 Prime with more detail, less noise, and the samples came out sharper and without noticeable corner softness. The difference is marginal though and you wont go wrong with the Redmi 4.

Video capturing

Both Redmis record 1080p videos at 30 fps. The video bitrate is similar at 20Mbps as is the audio one at 96Kbps. The sound is stereo on both samples.

The two samples we captured came out rich in detail. You can spot some noise here and there, but its by no means distracting. Colors are true to life, but maybe there could have been a little more punch. Audio recording is disappointing, though. We wish the Redmi 4 offered 4K video recording as the chipset surely supports it.

You can download the untouched samples if you like: Redmi 3s Prime (10s, 19MB) and Redmi 4 Prime (10s, 23MB).

Conclusion

If you thought the Xiaomi Redmi 4 Prime would be an easy pick over the Redmi 3s Prime, things are not that simple. Sure, the Redmi 4 Prime is an obvious upgrade over its predecessor with a better screen, chipset, and a refreshed design, but there are a few setbacks that could turn the odds into Redmi 3s Primes favor.

Xiaomi Redmi 3s Prime vs Redmi 4 Prime review

For starters, the Redmi 3s Prime is able to catch up with the Redmi 4 Prime performance-wise in graphic intensive tasks even though it lacks the raw CPU power. Games might even run better due to the lower resolution.

Then there is the camera quality. Oddly, the Redmi 3s Prime camera is superior and it did better in still images and selfies. The video recording turned out on par, though.

On the other hand, the Redmi 4 Prime is the better looker of the two even though it feels slightly heavier and its design looks a tier premium over the 3s. Its battery life turned out better, and its screen is really sharp thanks to the higher resolution screen.

Well, none of those two is perfect and there is no real winner in this fight. Both Redmi 3s Prime and Redmi 4 Prime are worthy of your hard-earned cash, so it all depends on what you need them for. If you are after the smarter looks and the battery life is crucial to you, the Redmi 4 Prime is a better fit. But if its about gaming and/or snapping photos - then the Redmi 3s Prime will serve you better.
