Galaxy S8 UI interface revealed a new minimalist look for Samsung

We noticed the new Android buttons on the side-by-side shot of the Galaxy S8 and its bigger sibling and now we get a better look at the new icons of the Samsung Experience skin.

Those were discovered hiding in th e latest version of the Smart Switch app, which was updated in anticipation of the new flagship.

Samsung has meandered quite a bit when it comes to graphics style, the latest iteration features solid colors with (mostly) white outlines forming the shapes of the icons. Fans of minimalistic design should appreciate them, though they do clash with the more elaborate icons that Google prefers.

Government has asked Google to select a telecommunications operator as a partner to test technology based Internet globe, Loon Project in the country."Google wants to test the Loon Project in the bands of expensive and scarce spectrum. Airtel gifts postpaid users 10GB free data per month for 3 months

Last week Airtel said that it would be giving its postpaid users free data under Airtel Surprise offer on March 13. Now the offer has gone live, and the teleco is giving postpaid subscribers 10GB of free 3G data pre month, for three months, taking the total to 30GB.

Airtel postpaid subscriber can claim the free data from MyAirtel app for Android and iOS. If you dont have the app, download & install from the respecti ve app stores, and then register your postpaid number to get an OTP (one time password) to verify your number. Then on the apps home page, click on the Happy Holi/claim your free data banner, and the free data will be credited to your account. Youll also receive a confirmation SMS, notifying you, when the offer is activated.

The offer is valid from today, March 13, till March 31, 2017.

Meanwhile, Airtel recently announced new packs with unlimited calling and bundled data for its prepaid customers, and also offered additional data for life for its broadband users as well.

The announcement comes at a time when Reliance Jios Happy New Year offer is coming to an end. The offer that gave Jio subscribers, unlimited voice calls, internet browsing (1GB FUP per day) and unlimited access to Jio apps will end on March 31, 2017. However, by paying one time fee of Rs. 99, Jio users can continue to enjoy the benefits of Happy New Year offer at Rs. 304 per month till March 31, 2018.

Build Quality / Design

The board!

Build quality wise, this is better than most of the other third party 1050Ti weve encountered. Each part that we could see and touch out of the box looks and feels solid and premium compared to the low-cost variants. The fans, the front fan shroud, the back plate, the ports and the circuit board all look a cut above against the more popular low cost counterparts.

What surprised us even more is that coming from the GTX 960 2GB, It is way smaller and there was a removal of the power connector. This means two things: The 1050Ti is more power efficient, and you can use this to upgrade almost any PCs that came out in the last 3 years. (Even prebuilt ones with enough space inside the case) 

Of course, well be testing the actual performance later to see if it is better in over all value.

Performance

Nice benchmark scores

We used the Unigine Valley benchmark tool for the 1050Ti 4 GB Expedition edition and the 960 2 GB. The results show that the 1050Ti 4 GB performed 10 percent better than the older 960 2 GB!

We tested the 1050Ti 4 GB expedition edition with the following games: Blizzards Overwatch, Ubisofts Rainbow Six: Siege and Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. Three of the most popular and three of the most demanding games tod ay and in gameplay stats this is what we got.

For Overwatch, we prepared recorded footage that shows the in-game data and long story short, the 1050Ti 4 GB Expedition Edition ran Overwatch on 1080P Ultra with consistent 70+ frames per second with no noticeable framerate drop at any point. On our old GTX 960 we were only reach 50 to 60 FPS on 1080P Ultra which was fair to our older card.

For Rainbow Six Siege, we were playing at 1080P Ultra with standard textures at a smooth and consistent 60+ FPS as compared to the GTX 960 2 GB we were hitting 30 to 60 FPS with some noticeable frame rate drops. So for R6: Siege, there is quite an improvement. 

In terms of cooling, the shroud that holds the two fans looks sturdy and it never makes noise loud enough to penetrate the case and into the room where the CPU is in. 

In idle usage where the GPU isnt used too much the temperature is stable at 34 to 36 degrees Celsius while in maximum gaming load, the temperatures reach up to 62 degrees Celsius which is fair for most cards in this price range. In fact, we were surprised, we were expecting it to be at 70 degrees. 

The Strix counterpart maxes at 58 degrees Celsius primarily because of the dual heat pipes but makes it more expensive than the expedition. A difference of 4 degrees isnt too much if you consider that the Expedition was made to operate continuously for long hours of play.

Verdict

The GTX 1050Tis performance is more or less 10% better than the older GTX 960 but without a power connector. This means that the 1050Ti is more efficient and is cheaper but if you are already a 960 user, there is no need to upgrade yet. But if you are coming from an older generation card or are using cards that perform lower than the 960, the 1050Ti is a great upgrade and we highly recommend it!

Kyocera rafre washable smartphone is now body soap resistant

Japan based rugged smartphone maker has Kyocera has launched its new washable smartphone called rafre in home market. It is the successor the DIGNO Rafre, which launched back in December 2015, as the worlds first hand-soap washable device.

The new rafre, in addition to resistance against foaming hand soap also gets resistance to foaming body soap. The compa ny is marketing rafre as a phone, that users can take with them in shower and use it even when the hands are wet. It also gets resistance to hot water and the touch screen can be used when users hands are wet or when wearing gloves. The phone is also water, dust and schock resistant, thanks to the MIL-STD-810G, IPX5, IPX8 and IP5X ratings.

Besides being used when taking shower, the Kyocera rafre can also be your kitchen companion as it comes pre-loaded with a cooking app, which allows you to scroll through recipes, set timers and answer calls through hand gestures without having to touch the display. One interesting feature is that the phone doesnt have an earpiece, instead the sound is transmitted using vibrations via phones display.

Coming to the specs, the Kyocera Rafre features 5-inch HD display, 2GB RAM and 16GB storage, which can be expanded via microSD card. There is no mention of the processor used. It comes with 13MP PDAF rear camera and 5MP front camera, runs Android Nougat and is fueled by 3000mAh battery.

The Kyocera Rafre wil l be available in March 2017 only in Japan exclusively for service provider KDDI corporation. It comes in Pale Pink, Clear White and Light Blue hues. Pricing is not known yet.

nubia M2 gets official with dual rear cameras

ZTE sub-brand nubia has finally launched its first dual-camera toting smartphone. The Chinese brand has unveiled the nubia M2 in China boasting dual-camera setup. The company also launched a a lite variant of M2, as well with single cameracalled nubia M2 Lite.

The nubia M2 sports 13MP dual rear cameras (one is a regular RGB sensor, while the other one is a Monochrome sensor) at the back with PDAF and dual-LED flash. The lens of both the cameras are protected by Sapphire glass. For selfies, it gets a 16MP f/2.0 80-degree wide-angle camera on the the front. Usually nubia phones have rear mounted fingerprint scanner, but the M2s fingerprint sensor is embedded into the home button.

Coming to the other specs, the nubia M2 features 5.5-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display and is powered by Snapdragon 625 processor with 4GB RAM. It will be offered in two storage variants, 64GB and 128GB. The storage is even expandable via microSD card.

Other specifications include dual-SIM support, 4G, VoLTE, WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth, USB Type-C port, Dolby Surround 7.1 and TruSignal Enhancement technology. It runs Android Marshmallow based nubia UI 4.0 and is fueled by 3630mAh battery supported by NeoCharge fast charging technology.

The nubia M2 Lite as the name suggests is a lite version of M2 with single rear camera. It features 5.5-inch HD display and is powered by MediaTeks MT6750 processor. The phone comes with either 3GB RAM/32GB storage and 4GB RAM/64GB storage and packs a 3000mAh battery. For photography, theres 13MP f/2.2 rear camera, and 16MP f/2.0 front camera. It runs Android Marshmallow and supports microSD card, dual-SIMs, 4G, VoLTE, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and fast charging. Theres also a fingerprint sensor embedded into the home button.

The nubia M2 is priced at CNY 2699 ($390 | Rs. 25,500) for the 64GB storage version and CNY 2999 ($435 | Rs. 28,500) for the 128GB storage options. The M2 Lite starts at CNY 1799 ($260 | Rs. 17,000). The M2 and M2 Lite will be available in China from March 28 in Gold and Black hues.

Honor 8 to receive Android Nougat starting February 10

Huawei sub-brand Honor back in December last year promised to release Android Nougat with EMUI 5.0 to its dual-camera toting Honor 8 some time in February. 

Now keeping its promise, Honor has confirmed that it would start rolling out Android nougat to Honor 8 on February 10, that is today. The update wi ll be rolled out over-the-air globally in stages, and by the end of the month, all Honor 8 will be upgraded to Android Nougat.

Currently it is not known which countries will get will get the update first, but since Nougat beta build was being tested for Honor 8 in the UK for few months, it makes sense, Nougat will hit UK and other parts of Europe, as well as the U.S (February 11).

Android Nougat for Honor 8 bring stock Android experience for simplified user interface, improvement to notifications and home screen, app drawer option, multi-windows support, along with Honors features.

Apart from Honor 8, Honor also confirmed that it will roll out Nougat to the budget Honor 5X some time in Q2, 2017.

Processing power, RAM, and storage

If youre in the market for a new smartphone, you dont have to pay up your nose for an Android device that has at least 3 GB of RAM and a capable processor. Its no longer practical to purchase a mobile device with less than 3 GB of RAM, because Android developers are now designing their apps around devices with faster processors and generous RAM. With really capable devices from Huawei and Honor hitting incredibly affordably prices, its a good idea to get a smartphone such as the Moto G4 Plus with at least 32 GB of storage and 3 GB of RAM.

The 64 GB of my Moto G4 Plus seems overkill and too roomy for users like myself who regularly back up to Linux or FreeBSD file servers. On the other hand, the lack of storage is the reason why I replaced my reliable Sony Xperia C3 with the G4 Plus. Saddled with only 8 GB of internal memory, the Sony Xperia C3 could only handle a limited number of apps and accept a limited amount of app/Android updates. Recent releases of iOS and Android require plenty of room to breathe, and even though you can arguably run Android Nougat on 16 GB of internal memory, improvements in smartphone camera technology have made taking photos a storage-costly affair. Plus, if you keep around a lot of apps on your device (a habit Millenials have sadly acquired), then 32 GB or 64 GB will allow your device and apps to receive updates without maxing out internal storage.

Its an unfair comparison since Windows 10 Mobile and Android 6.x are two totally different platforms and the Lumia 625 is a budget device that is scratchin g the bottom of the barrel, but I quickly noticed performance difference when opening OneNote on the G4 Plus. Both the Xperia C3 and Lumia 625 often couldnt open OneNote pages immediately unless they were synced beforehand or cached, but the G4 could without blinking, so although Im fine with entry-level devices, the advantages of more RAM and a better processor are obvious.

Applications that use processing power, such as VLC for Android, definitely benefit from more powerful innards. The Xperia C3 holds its own despite its age and entry-level hardware, but loading apps and multi-tasking on a device with 3GB of RAM is a different discussion entirely.

Networking and USB OTG

The Android 6.x-powered G4 Plus has the same minor niggle regarding certain Wi-Fi networks as the Android 5.x-powered Xperia C3. Depending on your Wi-Fi router, the G4 Plus may indicate that you are connected to the network but no Internet is ava ilable. However, in actuality, the Wi-Fi connection is fine and works as designed. Ive encountered the same message on the Xperia C3, which runs on Android 5.1.x. Its not a big problem, but may befuddle less patient users.

Support for USB On-the-Go adapters should be mandatory for all Android devices by now. Surprisingly, there are still plenty of Android tablets that dont support OTG adapters. Oddly enough, Samsung and ASUS uses the feature to distinguish their cheaper products with their more expensive releases. Thankfully, the Moto G4 Plus has support for OTG and worked with my flash drives and Microsoft wireless mouse.

Report Huawei Is Still The Number 3 Smartphone Brand In The World!

According to the Strategy Analytics and Counterpoints Research, Huawei remains to be the worlds 3rd largest smartphone maker by market share in the world! The Chinese smartphone giant has shipped more than 139.3 million  out of the 467 million units or 10% of the global market last 2016!

Huawei had a strong 2016!

A large part of that success came after the strong release of the Huawei P9 / P9 Plus and the Mate 9 co-enginered with Leica cameras. Huawei also solid ified their collaboration with Porsche Design for a special edition Mate 9. This year, the brand has launched the P10 and P10 Plus.

Huaweis global strategy

Huawei also invested so much in RND with 10% of their annual income in-order to produce very high quality and innovative for everyone. As a matter of fact, the company introduced the Max Berek Innovation Lab together with Leica to further improve the imaging capabi lities of their smartphones.

Huawei has also modified their channel strategy by putting up more offline service stores to more than 460 at over 45 countries in the world. The company launched its â€œ1,000-county plan” in China, aiming to set up shops in 1,000 counties across the country. 

“Huawei maintained third position with a record 10 percent global smartphone market share in Q4 2016, the first time the company has ever reached double figures. It was an impressive performan ce,” said Woody Oh, Director at Strategy Analytics. “Huawei’s overseas performance in markets like Western Europe is accelerating due to improved smartphone designs, more sophisticated marketing, and deeper retail distribution.”

Huawei has also established long-term and stable partnerships with thousands of distributors and retailers all over the world. As a result, their global public channel as a share of revenue increased to 71% in 2016, up 13 percentage points from 2015. The company now has more than 70,000 retailers globally.

"Huawei was a rising star in December 2016, an important achievem ent for Chinese companies,” said Tina Lu, Senior Analyst at Counterpoint Research. Commenting on Huawei’s aim to sell more smartphones than Apple in 2017, Lu added, “Performance in North America and Asian markets will be the key. If it can build on its strong position in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, then it has a chance to accomplish this goal.”

On top of that, the company has extended their partnerships to lifestyle areas including design, fashion, entertainment, and sports marketing. They got Football icon Lionel Messi and Hollywood stars Scarlett Johansson and Henry Cavill to increase brand awareness.

According to a survey by IPSOS, Huaweis global brand recognition increased from 76% in 2015 to 81% in 2016 as users’ appreciation and recognition of Huaweis design aesthetics, fashion and creativity improved significantly.

Huawei was also hailed as one of Interbrands 100 Best Global Brands for the second year at number 72. They were also ranked at BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands at number 50.

Th e other top 5 vendors includes Samsung, Apple, OPPO, and Vivo. At the top 5, 3 of them were Chinese brands with a total account of almost 20% of the global market share.
