Acer will bring several Android phones and a wearable to the MWC

Acer is bringing “a couple of new phones” and “a wearable” to the MWC, but the company has tempered expectations. In an interview, Acer EMEA President Emmanuel Fromon spoke at length about the PC industry (especially gaming), but had little to say about portable devices.

The phones will run Android, though Fromon says the company has “no market share ambition.” Only the leaders in the phone business make money and Acer would rather focus on other segments.

The company is not impressed with how its Windows 10 Mobile phones performed and will take the “wait and see” approach with the ARM-based Windows 10 that Microsoft is cooking up. The memory of Windows RT is still fresh.

Acer already has a successful OS for ARM-powered laptops - Chrome. It’s the leader with 35%-40% market share and is excited about running Android apps on its touch-enabled Chromebooks.

The co mpany has a big presence in gaming and is betting big on VR and AR, though it could be 3-5 years before those become mainstream. Acer has a join venture with Starbreeze, the StarVR headset, but it will also release headsets compatible with Microsoft HoloLens in Q2.

AMD’s new Ryzen processor also got namechecked, Fromon said “yes, I think AMD has a good portfolio coming up.”
